Public invited to learn from experts and experience an earthquake simulator

MATHER, CA – Building upon California’s leadership to implement a first-in-the-nation earthquake alert system and encouraging Californians to be earthquake prepared, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is hosting the Great California ShakeOut Tour, a statewide tour featuring an earthquake simulation trailer, October 12-15.

Ahead of the Great California ShakeOut Day on October 15, Cal OES is leading the effort to provide life-saving protective actions and preparedness information as we visit four California cities, all while featuring a simulator that offers a real-life sense of earthquake intensity.

“In California, the question isn’t whether the next earthquake will strike, but when. That’s why we’re committed to reaching communities across the state with the tools and information they need to protect their families before disaster hits,” said Caroline Thomas Jacobs, Cal OES Director.

The tour will allow visitors to experience simulated shaking similar to an actual earthquake while receiving important earthquake preparedness information. Beginning October 12 in San Francisco, the tour will make stops in four California cities, followed by Sacramento on October 13, Los Angeles on October 14 and San Diego on October 15.

To schedule remote interviews please email: media@caloes.ca.gov

It all leads up to the Great California ShakeOut Day on October 15 at 10:15 am, where millions of Californians will participate in an earthquake drill and practice life-saving actions like drop/lock, cover and hold on. Please visit ShakeOut.org to register your participation and get ShakeOut resources.

Through the earthquake simulator, users will have the opportunity to experience simulated shaking that replicates the intensity of up to 7.0 magnitude earthquakes.
