Over the past several years, the state has experienced an unprecedented number of emergencies and disasters. As these climate-driven natural disasters become more severe in California, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) staff have met each new challenge head-on.

The nearly 2,000 staff at Cal OES have responded to increasingly complex disasters in fresh and innovative ways, strengthening the foundation of emergency management to prepare for, respond to and recover from all types of emergencies and disasters.

This week, Cal OES welcomes you to learn more about Brian Doss, a Senior Emergency Services Coordinator in the State Operations Center (SOC) at Cal OES. As Lead Mission Coordinator, Brian works with different Cal OES offices and other state agencies to provide communities resources they request during disasters.

During an activation, up to 300 resource requests can come in. His work is vital in ensuring each request is followed up on and tracked from start to finish.

Requests can range from portable toilets, handwashing stations and shuttle service for disaster recovery centers to K-rails, compost sock and straw waddles for watershed protection to shower trailers, comfort kits and bottled water to support shelter operations.

“What I like most about working here is the coordination within Cal OES,” Brian said. “Everybody here is pulling for the same goal. The teamwork is exceptional. And just reaching across lines with everyone from Recovery to Planning to Finance; working in operations, we get to work with so many partners within the agency.”
