Over the past several years, the state has experienced an unprecedented number of emergencies and disasters. As climate-driven natural disasters become more severe in California, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) staff has met each new challenge head-on.

The nearly 2,000 staff at Cal OES have responded to increasingly complex disasters in fresh and innovative ways, strengthening the foundation of emergency management to prepare for, respond to and recover from all hazards.

This week, Cal OES welcomes you to learn more about Conner Spears, Telecommunication Systems Technician with the Public Safety Communications directorate His work supports the public by maintaining radio systems, dispatch equipment, and critical systems that first responders rely on to communicate.

Behind every piece of public safety system is a team of people committed to protecting their communities. For Conner, that work is both hands-on and deeply rewarding.

My job is impactful because it can mean the difference between someone living or dying, communication is extremely important,” said Conner.

Conner enjoys working in the field and contributing to real-world public safety systems, also known as infrastructure, that makes a difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s installing equipment or supporting a project from the ground up, he takes pride in seeing the impact firsthand.

Often, he’ll be driving down the freeway and spot a structure he helped build. In those moments, he’s reminded that his work is actively serving and protecting the community, it’s a full-circle moment.
